Old School Work Habits Worth Holding Onto

Brenna McDonald | On 12, May 2015

Thanks to the innovative mindset of our generation, the career world of decades past is no more. While this progress has brought about many positive changes, there are certain aspects of the more traditional workforce that are worth keeping around.

Follow Up On Interviews

It is always a good idea to follow up after you are interviewed for a position. Within 24 hours of your interview, send your interviewer a quick email to thank them for taking the time to speak with you, and tell them you hope to hear from them soon. Be sincere, and show that you are grateful and excited for the opportunity. You would be surprised how much of a difference this can make in helping you stand out from other candidates!

Chat With Your Co-Workers

With technology dominating our communication today, it is natural to get wrapped up in social media feeds during downtime at work. However, this can lead to isolation and even loneliness. Take the time to have genuine conversations with your fellow employees. Ask about what’s going on in their lives outside of work, discuss the latest episode of your favorite TV show or seek advice from your more seasoned co-workers. Befriending your colleagues not only gives you a friendly reputation, it also makes your time at work much more enjoyable!

Leave Your Desk For Your Lunch Break

Today, more and more people are taking their lunch breaks at their desks. It’s usually an attempt to be more productive and do work while chowing down, but staying put for lunch can actually decrease productivity. Physically removing yourself from your workspace is a simple way to boost your creativity. Even if you bring lunch from home, use your break as a time to take a walk, get some fresh air or even just change up your scenery within the office. You’ll feel more refreshed when you return to your desk, and your mind will be ready to get back to work.

Make A To-Do List

It is a proven fact that the greatest satisfaction in life comes from a completely crossed off to-do list (okay, maybe not—but it’s definitely up there!). With all of the tiny tasks that fly at you in the course of a day, it is easy for one or two to get lost in the shuffle. Take two minutes at the beginning of your day to write out a to-do list in your planner or on some cute stationary. It will help you stay organized and focused throughout the day, and you’ll feel so accomplished when all of your items are complete!
