Our Favorite Celebrity Memoirs

Daisha Easler | On 24, Sep 2014

In celebration of Lena Dunham’s upcoming memoir, we’re sharing our five favorite celebrity memoirs.

These books will make you laugh, cry and relate to the stars. Hollywood isn’t as glamorous and easy as it may seem.

Derek Hough’s Taking the Lead

It’s unbelievably hard not to love Derek Hough. He’s both talented and attractive with Emmy Award winning moves. Taking the Lead focuses on how he has grown and learned from his travels and personal run-ins with bullies.

Chelsea Handler’s Are You There Vodka It’s Me Chelsea?

Chelsea’s book is a collection of essays about occurrences in her life that led her to a dear friend, vodka! We love that she has learned to turn embarrassing and unfortunate situations into an entertaining read. We’re fans of any celebrity who can not only open up about the not-so-glamorous parts of their journeys, but also laugh about them too.

Tina Fey’s Bossypants

“Some people say, ‘Never let them see you cry.’ I say, if you’re so mad you could just cry, then cry. It terrifies everyone.” That is a little piece of advice from Ms. Tina Fey’s New York Times best seller. She puts a hilarious spin on stories about growing up and landing a role on Saturday Night Live and creating 30 Rock. As the screenplay writer of Mean Girls, we’re not surprised at all that she can write a kickass memoir!

Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

This executive producer/actress/writer doesn’t fail to make us laugh with her brutally honest advice.

Her key to success? “Do what I did, which is (3) stay in school and be a respectful and hardworking wallflower, and go to an accredited online university.” With that great advice, how can you not want to rush out a get a copy?

Anthony Kiedis’ Scar Tissue

Unlike a few of the other books on our list, this is not a comical story. The Red Hot Chili Peppers front man had serious struggles with drug addiction since he was just eleven years old. This very vulgar yet honest story of his highs and lows is quite compelling and triumphant as he kicked his habit in the early 2000s. Roughly a decade later, he and his band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012—they will definitely go down in history as one of the greats.

Whether you’re laughing it up with those three funny ladies or crying with our two gentlemen on the list, a lot can be learned from all five of these extraordinary people. Turn off the scripted reality TV and crack open one of these raw, less censored peeks into celebrity life.
