Master Class: Foundation

Wearing liquid and powder foundation is one of the trickier concepts within the makeup world.

If you wear a shade too dark or too light, it can (and likely will) be catastrophic to your look. Too often the dreaded “make up line” we all fear is unknowingly plastered along some poor girl’s jawline or the remains of your makeup application are left on your boyfriend’s shirt collar post hug.

With a little at home research and a few opinions from the women behind makeup counters, you will be able avoid these tragic makeup fails. Instead, you’ll look flawless and maximize foundation’s full potential.

To begin, P&B suggests taking a look at your bare face to determine what you’re working with. Is your complexion dry or oily? Do you have a few unsightly blemishes or do you want to even out your skin tone? Whatever the characteristics may be, there are thousands of beauty products to correct any problem. Which begs the question: which product is for you?

Choosing the right foundation will set the stage for the rest of your face. For the best results, choose a color that is one shade lighter than your natural skin color. The face should always be lighter in color than your arms or chest in order to maintain the most natural look.

Liquid foundation works best for normal and dry skin. It often features a creamy consistency and moisturizing component to counter dryness. The finishes range from full to light coverage, matte to dewy, and all areas in between. If you want to disguise imperfections or create a blank slate for other make up, go for a full coverage foundation. If you’re looking to even out your skin tone, light coverage is a better option. A dewy or matte finish simply depends on the look you are trying to achieve.

Women with oilier skin should avoid using liquid foundation with a dewy finish, as it will enhance the oily look. We recommend using a set liquid foundation with a white or translucent powder like this from Sephora Collection ($16). Oil-free liquid foundation will also help reduce shine.

Powder foundation is a great option for those looking to illuminate or get a natural matte look. The powder absorbs oil, leaving skin with a smooth, dry finish. Women with dry skin or patches should avoid using powder, as it will further dry out skin and make the dryness more apparent. Try CoverGirl Simply Powder, $8. Before applying, spritz a facial primer on a makeup brush and apply all over your face. This will help hold the powder in place as well as allow for a smoother application.

A powder-liquid combo can be beneficial for those who don’t fit into either category fully. Try applying an oil absorbing powder sparingly to areas which are oily, and liquid in remaining areas. The key is to always blend well, regardless of which method you choose.
