How Greek Life Helps You Later In Life

You’ve seen Greeks on your campus, in the news and around your community.

Maybe you even are one. Sometimes, fraternities and sororities get a bad reputation. And many who aren’t involved think that Greek life is all about parties, hazing and not much else, but that’s not true.

Being involved in a Greek organization can be very beneficial during and after college.

It helps you learn how to network

From your first night of recruitment as a potential new member to your graduation day, you spend your life as a Greek member networking. Through recruitment, community service events, fundraisers and socials, you are constantly meeting and talking to new people. You subconsciously learn how to network and connect with others, which is an invaluable skill to have post-graduation.

It provides leadership opportunities

Being part of a Greek organization opens you up to multiple leadership opportunities. You can serve on your sorority’s executive council or take up a smaller role, such as t-shirt chair or formal chair. Even small leadership positions in Greek life provide experience working with others, managing a committee and planning events. Most organizations also provide leadership training through conferences and conventions to help you hone your skills even more.

It gives you a chance to give back

All Greek organizations have at least one philanthropy. Greeks participate in fundraisers, charity events and hands-on volunteer work as part of their membership requirements.

Volunteering for these causes gives you a chance to experience life outside of the college bubble and find a passion that often continues long after graduation.

It teaches you time management

Being in a sorority or a fraternity is a huge time commitment. You have weekly chapter meetings, philanthropy events, study hours and more. All this commitment forces you to use your time wisely, which is an imperative skill to have in the workplace and everyday life. After four years of effectively managing your time, you’ll be able to budget your post-grad life with ease.

It makes you accountable for something bigger than yourself

In college, it’s easy to adopt an “it’s all about me” mentality. Being part of a Greek organization reminds you that there is a bigger world out there. You learn to care for other members, respect traditions and be responsible for yourself and your actions because you represent not only yourself, but your organization too.
