We tend to fall into patterns with what we wear, recycling the same items over and over again. In the winter it could be pants and a sweater and in summer it might be dresses. While it’s nice to be able to mix it up every so often, it can be difficult when you have a dress code to follow. Since the summer heat is just around the corner, here are some general rules for sporting workplace-appropriate shorts.
Rule #1: Watch The Length
Just like wearing skirts or dresses to work it’s important to wear a pair of shorts with an appropriate hemline. A general rule of thumb is the hemline of your shorts should be longer than your fingertips when your arms are by your side. We recommend these.
Rule #2: Know Your Fabrics
Some fabrics give the look of casual while others actually tend to look a little dressier. For example, you won’t want to wear denim because it is way too casual. Try to stick with a linen or cotton fabric. We recommend these.
Rule #3: Avoid Form Fitting Bottoms
As it goes with pants, dresses and skirts, you’re not going to want to wear anything that is super tight or form fitting. Always err on the side of caution and pick an item that is looser fitting. We recommend these.
Rule #4: Consider Your Footwear
Wearing heels will make your legs look longer and, in turn, will make your shorts look shorter. If you can’t go without a heel, opt for a pair of kitten heels, which are currently on trend. Otherwise, a nice pair of flats will do. However, a regular heel would be acceptable if the length of the shorts is just above the knee.
Rule #5: Be Confident
Above all, you have to be confident with what you wear. If it looks as if you’re doubting your outfit choices, others may begin to doubt them, as well.
