Baby, it’s cold outside.
Winter is great, but sometimes the cold weather that comes along with it can put a real damper on your mood, especially if your living space is too cold. Before we enter the real deep freeze of winter, we have some tips for you to get your dorm or apartment ready for chilly winter weather.
Make Your Bed Cozy
While you may not be able to prevent the weather outside from being dreary, you can certainly make your bedroom feel cozy! Switch out your summer sheets for a warmer flannel option, and pile on a bunch of thick blankets and pillows to add warmth to your sleeping space. If your bed is up against a window, line it with a few large fuzzy pillows to keep the cold glass from making the rest of your bed feel like an icicle.
Prevent Cold Feet
The tiled floors of the dorms can get really cold. Invest in a good pair of slippers or a few warm fuzzy socks to make walking around not quite so chilly. A cute throw rug can also warm up your floors while adding personality to your living space.
Keep a Flashlight Handy
Snow and ice can easily make power lines go down, leaving you in the dark during winter storms. Be sure to stash a flashlight somewhere you can easily access during an emergency. It’s also a good idea to keep an emergency kit with water, non-perishables and batteries somewhere close by too.
Convert Your Closet
Out with the old and in with the new! Take all of your summer gear out of your closet and make sure your sweaters, coats and scarves are front and center. Check to see if your boots, hats and gloves still fit.
Need new winter apparel? Don’t worry, you have time to buy what you need before the weather gets extremely cold.Keep Cold Air From Getting In
Drafty windows and doors are the main culprits of chilly apartments and dorms. Make sure your windows don’t let any cold in. If you start to feel a draft, buy some weather stripping to seal windows. Window insulator kits are also a good (and cheap!) way to keep drafts at bay. We like this one from Target. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of installing a whole kit, heavy curtains can add some color to your room while helping keep the cold out more than just a plain window would.
