So you find yourself once again single on Valentine’s Day. #Whatever.
Let all your friends have sex and then go to their 4 p.m. dinner reservations because they made their plans two weeks ago. When they come back, you can just be drunk and their third wheel and have an equally great night.
While they’re out to dinner or if you plan on spending the whole night alone, here are some great movies to watch while chugging wine.
Movies That Make You Cry
Let’s just get the crying films out of the way first. To be as cliché as possible, The Notebook comes first. They were so in love. Of course it had to work out but be as tragic as possible. Also, Rachel McAdams is perfect. Let’s just tack on her film The Vow to this list. Of course there’s other standard crying films like Titanic, P.S. I Love You, Moulin Rouge! and 90% of Julia Roberts’ movies. Seriously. Pretty Woman, Steel Magnolias, Erin Brockovich and Stepmom. They’re just sad. Buzzfeed also has complied a handy list of films dedicated to making you cry, although not all of them fit a stereotypical Valentine’s Day vibe. Be warned. They call it the “ugly cry” list.
Movies That Make You Laugh
“Ugly cry” is, perhaps ironically, a great place to start off the comedies. Like when Rose Byrne cries in Bridesmaids. Bridesmaids can be watched any time, alone or with friends, but there should always be wine. Rachel McAdams shows up once again in this category with Mean Girls, which is a timeless classic for anyone under the age of 25.
Other gems include Pitch Perfect, The Princess Bride and 90% of Sandra Bullock’s films. The Proposal, Miss Congeniality and The Heat come to mind.Movies That You Can Stream
As for streaming, HBO GO is a little light on films that make for good Valentine’s Day fodder. However, The Other Woman and The Devil Wears Prada are available. Netflix has many more choices. A few choices include 13 Going on 30, Sleepless in Seattle and The Switch. Basically just look through the “Romantic Movies” section. Spoiler alert: there are a lot of Julia Roberts movies that have yet to be named here.
So this list is a touch cliché. Roll with it. Valentine’s Day is the same for every single person every year. You only need wine and a movie.
