How To Live Alone

As college ends and the real world begins, many of us find ourselves living alone for the first time.

The adjustment can be frightening and sometimes lonely, but like all opportunities in life, there is a chance for growth and happiness. Living alone can help you learn:

How to entertain yourself: Many struggle with finding ways to find entertainment without the help of others. If you’re not naturally introverted, this can be especially difficult. Finding a good book or new series on Netflix, exercising and trying a new craft can fill your time with endless hours of enjoyment.

If you find yourself feeling lonely, reach out to friends and family members through texts, phone calls or Skype. But try to use your time alone to find yourself and what makes you happy. And remember, time alone is healthy in the right amounts. Discover what works best for you.

How to cook for yourself: Cooking can become a challenge since it is difficult to estimate how much food to make. There’s not a roommate around to finish off what you couldn’t. When grocery shopping, search for meals for one and smaller sized items. If you find you have made too much for a meal, properly store the food to enjoy later. Pre-making meals can come in handy and save you time. Pinterest can be an excellent resource—it has numerous recipes and tips for individual meals. Read our tips for how to cook for one here.

How to feel safe: Safety is another concern for young people out on their own for the first time. First of all, get to know your neighbors and those around you. Those bonds will help you feel safer because you’ll have people to contact when you are in need. Also, before signing your lease, make sure you have done your research on how safe your surroundings are; it will give you peace of mind later.

Keep in mind most of the terror we feel is inside our heads and comes from not being familiar with the situation. If you find yourself in an unsafe situation, call the police immediately.

How to grow: When you spend time alone, all you have to worry about is you, and there is nothing selfish about that. It can help you find what you truly desire and what makes you happy. As previously mentioned, fill your time in healthy ways, such as exercising, reading and crafting. Also, for most of us, this is the first time we don’t have to answer to anyone. We can decorate the space how we like and not have to worry about anyone else’s taste and mess. It is freeing really—you just have to let it be.
