How to be a Standout College Student

You know the benefits of doing well in class.

Good grades, possible letters of recommendation from professors and actually learning something are all motives for succeeding in your courses throughout your college years.  But how can you stand out without sucking up? We’ve got tips that will help get you to the top of the class.

Get There Early

Don’t be the girl that walks in ten minutes late, Starbucks latte in hand. Plan to get to class at least five minutes early, so that you have enough time to get a good seat and get organized before the lecture starts. Not only will your professor appreciate you being on time, but you’ll also be able to prepare yourself for class, instead of rushing in late and feeling behind for the entire class period.

Dress Up

Sure, gym shorts and a ratty old t-shirt may seem like the best outfit for class, especially an early one, but looking sloppy certainly won’t win you extra points with your professors. Plus, when you dress nice, you mentally prepare yourself to do the best work that you can. Wearing pj’s to class can make you feel as if you’re still in bed, which may lead to dozing off or spacing out. Even throwing on jeans and a slightly nicer top can have an effect on your work ethic and your professors’ respect. Being a student is your job during your college years; your wardrobe should reflect that.

Take Meticulous Notes

No matter how good your memory is, you’re not going to be able to remember everything that is said in every class period. Take notes so when it comes time to review for exams, you have all of the information you may need. Not only will you be grateful to have all of your notes at the end of the semester, but actively taking notes in every class will help you remain focused and on task, something that professors will definitely notice and appreciate.

Utilize Office Hours

If your classes are large, there’s a good chance the professor won’t be able to remember everyone’s name, much less be able to help each individual student with what they are struggling with. If you’re having trouble in class, or just want to get to know your professors better, pay them a visit during their office hours! You’ll be able to talk to your professor one-on-one to get individualized advice and instruction, and you’ll be able to build relationships that could lead to letters of recommendation or even a job offer one day.

Go Above & Beyond

Do more than the minimum amount of work required to pass the class. Not only will your grades (and parents) thank you, but you’ll also get the most out of every class you take. There’s no need to go completely overboard, but try to do a little more than the assignments stipulate. If a term paper has to be 20-25 pages, try to make it at least 23. Make projects look as professional as possible, and dress up for class presentations. Going the extra mile will make you stand out as a star student to your professors, and will help make sure that all of the work you do for class will be suitable for a professional portfolio one day.
