Year In Review: Top 10 Fashion Trends of 2014

2014 transcended so many styles and decades, which made for a rather interesting time for fashion. It was a year of crop tops, high-waisted bottoms and oddly enough, simplicity. Below, we have the top ten trends that ruled street style, red carpets and everything in between.

Chambray Shirt
For awhile now, chambray–or denim–shirts have been on trend what’s great about them is there are so many ways to wear them. Pair them with a colorful pair of jeans, wear it as a sweater with a shirt underneath it, or be bold and try pairing it with denim jeans.

Oversized Flannel
The ’90s style came back in a big way this year in more ways than one. The oversized flannel is just one of our favorite looks from the decade. They are great because if it’s too warm outside you can simply tie the flannel around your waist and if it cools off a bit, you have something cool and casual to throw over your shoulders.

Keeping It Simple
Less is more–as the saying goes. Keeping your outfit simple and clean is always something that will be on trend. Try this trend by pairing jeans with a t-shirt. It’s as easy as that. We could all take notes from how effortlessly Cara Delevingne dresses whether it’s for a photoshoot or her own personal style.

Overalls
Whether you liked the trend or not, overalls made a comeback in a big way this year. Lucky the trend was as baggy as it once was in the ’90s. Designers took the trend and tailored it to fit the body better.

Printed Sweaters
Animal sweaters in particular were huge this year.

Not necessarily animal print but rather the animal themselves. It was a huge year for Foxes and Owls galore.

Capes
Right off the bat, Lupita Nyong’o stunned red carpet viewers at the Golden Globe Awards with her statement piece of a dress … and cape. Throughout the year, celebrities from Kelly Osbourne and Alexa Chung to Nicole Richie and Amy Adams all were spotted sporting the style.

Crop Tops & Matching Bottoms
Taylor Swift was the queen of the matching crop top, skirt ensemble this year. By matching your crop top to your skirt you create a great go to outfit that doesn’t take much thought to put together. (You can literally just search “Taylor Swift matching outfit” on Pinterst and there’s a plethora to choose from.)

Sheer Skirts & High Slits
Showing some skin was all the rage this year. Some celebrities opted for the sheer skirt option. This was a widely liked trend that was also available to the everyday shopper at stores, such as Target or Kohls. Other celebrities–like Kendall Jenner– opted for super high slits to get the media talking.

High Waisted Bottoms
This trend–also from the 1990s–is a great alternative for those who aren’t a big fan of low rise jeans. They also hit you at your waist, where many of us are our thinnest creating a great shape to work with.

Simple Sheaths
Dresses have taken on a new style all themselves, and that is simplicity. We saw them all over the runways. It’s a great trend because they are super easy to pull off.
