Why We’re In Love With ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’

“Unbreakable! They alive, dammit!”

If you find yourself singing and humming this tune under your breath, chances are you’ve heard of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the latest Netflix comedy series created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.

Originally set to air as a 13-episode first season on NBC, the show was instead sold to Netflix and given a two season order which premiered at the beginning of March and has become one of the most streamed and talked about shows on the Web.

Here’s why we can’t seem to stop binge-watching the show:

The Adorable Ellie Kemper

Not only is Kemper unbreakable in her role as Kimmy Schmidt, but she has a charm that is bound to capture your attention. Many of you may recognize Kemper from her supporting roles in Bridesmaids and The Office, and even then it was hard for us not to fall in love with her quirkiness. Now is her time to shine as the leading lady.

The Rest Of The Cast

Jane Krakowski plays the Manhattan mom who hires Kimmy as a nanny. She’s hilarious with her perfectly timed one-liners. Tituss Burgess is fabulous as Kimmy’s roommate who aspires to be a Broadway star.

The Outlandish Plot & Situations

The show’s concept is rather bizarre. Kimmy and three other women, who have been trapped underground in an Indiana doomsday cult for 15 years, are rescued within the first few minutes of the pilot episode. Kimmy breaks away from the rest of the pack to start her life in New York City. From there, the series follows the misadventures and silly situations that Kimmy and her newfound city friends find themselves in. There’s something about the zaniness of the show that adds to its humor and charm, and we can’t seem to get enough of it.

The 30 Rock Parallels

If you were one of the die hard 30 Rock fans who mourned the series finale two years ago then you will appreciate this show by the same creators. Even though the premise is far different from 30 Rock, plenty of the humor in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is the same—from the absurd situations to its larger-than-life characters. Oh, and Jane Krakowski is brilliant in both roles. It’s also hard not to see a little bit of Liz Lemon shining through in Kimmy Schmidt as the inspiring and endearing leading woman.

“Females Are Strong As Hell”

The line from the show’s catchy opening song highlights one of the show’s biggest themes. Deep down, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is about a woman trying to regain her independence and identity after living in an oppressive environment for such a long time. At the end of the day, we always support shows that highlight a woman’s strength. You go girl!
