5 Reasons You Should Be Watching ‘Broad City’

Life is chaotic when you’re in your twenties and no one portrays that more accurately than Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson.

Broad City is the latest show portraying 20-something females trying to survive in New York City. The duo came up with the idea for the show, loosely based on their own lives, while performing at the improvisational comedy group Upright Citizens Brigade.

They made a series on YouTube before pitching it to television networks. Currently on its second season, the show has gained a significant following after its debut last January and is one of Comedy Central’s breakout hits.

If you’re not already watching it, here are five reasons why Broad City should be the next show you stream on Hulu.

Ilana And Abbi Are Imperfect In A Perfect Way

They are broke and complain about their jobs. They are raunchy, talk about sex and drugs, curse like sailors and make bad decisions. Ilana and Abbi are human and show us that you shouldn’t be ashamed of yourself no matter how awkward, weird or crazy your life is, and we love them because of it. So while they may not be Manhattan socialites or models making their way down the runway of Fashion Week, they sure are comedic geniuses.

The Show Doesn’t Take Itself Too Seriously

The scenarios become goofier and more outlandish with each episode and the show knows it. Unlike Girls or 2 Broke Girls, Ilana and Abbi aren’t trying to prove themselves to the world. They just want to have fun and live their life as it is. They aren’t afraid to poke fun at themselves and you will cringe and laugh at the situations they’re in. It’s refreshing to watch a show where not every situation suddenly turns into a soap opera.

It Shows New York City As It Is

New York City is not always glamorous as shows like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl make it seem. Half the time, the two ladies are scrambling through the city, battling city creeps and subway performers, to get somewhere on time. The show includes more than the usual hotspots. Even when they’re at a hotspot, it isn’t necessarily glamorous. Case in point: during the show Illana and Abbi get stuck in Times Square and are grossed out by all the tourists. Yes, New York City is a magnificent place, but it can also be hideous—and that’s what makes it so real.

It Is This Generation’s Buddy Comedy For Feminists

If Workaholics and Pineapple Express are the stoner and buddy comedies for men, then Broad City is the buddy comedy for women. Pineapple Express star Seth Rogen actually makes a guest appearance in the season two premiere and it’s every bit as fantastic as you would imagine.

It Is Produced By Amy Poehler

One of America’s favorite funny ladies got the show off the ground after Ilana and Abbi reached out to her. Amy serves as an executive producer too. She also may or may not have guest starred on a few episodes, but I guess you’ll have to see for yourself.

New episodes of Broad City air every Wednesday at 10:30/9:30c p.m. on Comedy Central.
