Pink & Black’s Spring Reading List

It’s almost spring break and you’ll need a book to keep you occupied while lounging on the beach.

Gone are the days of snow and cuddling under a cozy comforter. It’s getting warmer and everyone is slowly exchanging their oversized sweaters and jackets for tank tops and bathing suits.

With a change of clothes come a new slew of books. With so many coming out this year, we have compiled a list of some of the hottest releases to get you hooked this season.

Almost Famous Women by Megan Mayhew Bergman
In this collection of short stories, Bergman writes about some of history’s fierce and forgotten ladies and the situations that almost propelled them to fame by adding a fun and delightful twist of her own. Some of the women we meet are Oscar Wilde’s misunderstood niece, Dolly, Lord Byron’s illegitimate daughter, Allegra, and conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton.

How To Grow Up by Michelle Tea
For those of you who enjoy memoirs, here’s one you must check out. Tea writes about her life as an aspiring young writer in San Francisco and doesn’t hold back when talking about her relationships and dead-end jobs. Tea’s book shows us that despite life’s uncertainties and setbacks, you can always bounce back if you take it one step at a time.

Disgruntled by Asali Solomon
Welcome to the life of Kenya Curtis, a young girl growing up in West Philadelphia during the late ’80s and early ’90s. In her novel, Solomon explores the theme of race as well as the struggles of adolescence, fitting in and overcoming one’s limitations.

Funny Girl by Nick Hornby
Looking for a lighter book with some laughs? The latest novel from Hornby, the author of About a Boy and High Fidelity, follows the adventures of a young woman named Sophie Straw living in London during the 1960s. You’ll enjoy reading all the quirky characters she meets while trying to make it as a television sitcom actress.

The Country of Ice Cream Star by Sandra Newman
How about a dystopian thriller to keep you up all night? Set in the future of a deteriorating America, the country is swept by a plague where every child is born with a disease called “Posies” and die by the age of twenty. When Ice Cream Star discovers that her brother is showing symptoms, she embarks on a long journey to find a cure.

The Unfortunate Importance of Beauty by Amanda Filipacchi
Two women living in New York City, one who is considered drop dead beautiful and the other not so much, attempt to mask their given appearances in an attempt to make people see them for who they truly are. The result is a funny, bizarre story that satirizes society’s obsession with beauty and questions the true meaning of identity.

Whether it’s something to make you laugh, cry or keep you on the edge of your seat, we hope you find a book on this list to pack and take along with you on your springtime getaway.
