Trend Report: Bootcut Jeans

Devotees to the skinny, you might want to sit down for this. It’s taken approximately five hundred years, but the skinny jean craze is officially over. You can go take that old pair out of hiding now.

The skinny jean fad has been alive since the dark stone ages of the earth, or at least since like 2008.

Emos wear them flatfooted and belted; hipsters roll the ankles and prefer a vintage “wear and tear” look; skaters like them with sneakers and a snapback… we can play this game all day. Once you start seeing them it’s hard to stop. If there are people, there will be skinny jeans.

When Regina George took her throne in 2004, the classic five-pocket bootcut was everyone’s go-to denim. But once skinny jeans conquered the scene, the world never looked back—until now.

The bootcut jean has regained some strength and is reigning its style supremacy once again. A plethora of stores like Abercrombie, Forever 21 and American Eagle are offering mounds of flare jeans for teens and beyond. Even more sophisticated brands like Burberry, J.Crew and J Brand have bootleg jeans for the sophisticated businesswoman inside all of us.

Here are some of our favorites for you and your boo:

  1. 715 Winter Sun Bootcut Jeans from Levi’s
  2. Lolita Bootcut Jeans from Lucky Brand
  3. DIESEL Livier Flare Demin Jeans from T.J. Maxx
  4. Paige Hartley Bootcut Jeans from Paige
  5. Distressed Bootcut Jeans for him from Banana Republic
  6. 1969 Bootcut Jeans for him from Gap

Bootcut jeans are the unsung heroes of denim silhouettes. They make your legs look super long and add some shape to balance out a heavier shoe—bootleg jeans look flawless paired with ankle boots.

The ideal shoe height is not too high, so steer clear of neck-breaking heels. The purpose of bootcut jeans is to accentuate your Vogue-worthy legs, not to show off anything else you’re wearing… although that shouldn’t stop you from pumping up your new (or old) bootlegs with some Carrie Bradshaw-inspired shoes.

So, completing the look today are our top three bootcut-worthy ankle booties:

  1. On Set Heeled Ankle Boots from Free People
  2. Impo Nevada Booties from DSW
  3. Kristin Cavallari’s ‘Laurel’ Peep Toe Booties from Nordstrom

You don’t have to be attending a 70s birthday party or a post-Woodstock reenactment to pull off the beloved bootcut jean. A simple black tank and some fierce booties can turn the oldie-but-goodie into a modern showstopper. Or wear them with other closet classics like a crisp oxford shirt or a slimming tuxedo jacket. Bootcuts are curvy, playful and versatile and work with all body types; they’re essentially a pair of pants and an accessory all in one. Whether you’re heading to class or strutting on the streets of Hollywood, the bootcut is your long-lost bestie.
