It has recently been announced, in a surprising and awesome twist, that a new Ghostbusters remake is coming, and it will be headlined by a female cast. Naturally, the male tears began to flow in abundance.
The same thing happened when Lucy Liu was cast as Watson in CBS’s Elementary.
So let’s hope men being recast as female is a new trend because there are so many movies that can be remade to be all/majority female, and this just happens to be a list of them.
The first is Ocean’s Eleven. The film that comes to mind is probably the one featuring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. However, this film is already a remake of a 1960’s movie with the same title. If it’s been remade once, there’s nothing to say it can’t be done with leading ladies. Please picture Amy Poehler, Emma Stone and Kerry Washington performing the heist. The casino owner could be Cameron Diaz. They would steal Diaz’s man, Ian Somerhalder or something. He doesn’t matter.
Another film series that needs women could be Men in Black. Now imagine Sandra Bullock and Lupita Nyong’o killing aliens in suits. If that doesn’t sound fantastic, you would be their next target. If the first Men in Black film can come out in 1997 and the third in 2012, waiting a few years for a female version is totally plausible.
How about instead of action, a woman leads a drama, forced into countless gritty situations. Well that sounds like a Quentin Tarantinio movie. Sure, Uma Thurman was the lead in Kill Bill, but what about Pulp Fiction? Substitute Angelina Jolie for John Travolta, Viola Davis for Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson for Bruce Willis and this is just as engaging of a film.
Lastly, just for laughs, a comedy: Anchorman. A film about how a woman ruins a newsroom seems apt to be changed. Perhaps that news team included Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams and Kristen Stewart? Replace Christina Applegate with Channing Tatum and this becomes equally hilarious.
If this article sounds odd to you, think about why that is? It might just be that these film gender-bends propose the idea that men are objectified by the leading ladies in the film. Then men become the pieces and pawns used by women. Although it’s equally as fun to just think these actresses in awesome lead roles.
