When I went home for the holidays this year, some of my mom’s first words to me were, “You need more color in your wardrobe.”
Flash forward to Christmas Day. Wrapping paper colorfully littered our living room floor as I sat in a pile of pretty new things, all of which were black and nude.
My mom shrugged and replied, “Well, I wanted you to like them!” She knows me well. If it’s black and has some interesting texture combination going on, I probably own it (suede and leather boots, anyone?). But that doesn’t mean I don’t need some color in my life! Here are some fun ways to find that flare, even for those a bit addicted to neutrals.Lip Envy
I’m not usually the girl who makes small talk in the elevator or grocery line. But I make an exception when I see a bright, bold lipstick color being fiercely pulled off. Everyone has a different definition of bold and that’s totally okay. If you’re not used to wearing lipstick, try something light but matte or something bright but sheer.
Nail Armor
Your nails take up such a small percentage of surface area on your body, but they spend a lot of time on the frontlines. While you type, pick up a wine glass or reach for the check, they’re bound to be noticed as a sparkly shade of teal or classic hue of red.
Bag Lady
Everyone can use some colorful arm candy. The nice thing about purses is that they’re entirely separate from your body. No unzipping or makeup remover necessary. Unhappy with that purple clutch? Put it down. Step away. Pick another.
Feet Feats
Shoes can be a really fun way to add a pop of color to your wardrobe. Slip on yellow espadrilles with a simple white sundress—and voila. You’re walking on sunshine.
Under Where?
And then there are the days when you’re not going to want to mess with the perfect black on black on black thing you have going on. Those are the days you’ll find me in my lacy fuchsia underwear. Because honestly, why not? I still look chic as hell on the outside.
