Why You Should Date A Writer

“I can turn you into poetry, but I cannot make you love me.”

It’s true that dating a writer will in no way guarantee you love. But it can definitely up your chances! A little poetry never hurt anyone; we hear some guy named Shakespeare was pretty good on his feet. Here’s to all the writers out there and all the reasons that they’re oh so very dateable.

They’re great storytellers.

Maybe not always on the spot, but after they’ve had time to process (and maybe write it down), they have a way with the colorful expressions, nuanced interactions and real life story arcs that are the subject of many a movie and novel.

They’re self-reflective.

The amount of time they spend thinking about people and the world around them ultimately gets turned inward somewhere along the way. Growth as a writer comes from finding their voice and finding their voice is really just a practice of becoming self-aware.

They’ll preserve the intangible.

Relationships are sometimes beautiful, sometimes tragic and almost always both. That intensity and passion can’t be kept in a box of memories or framed in a collage. A writer will turn you into sonnets and stories that will forever tug at your heartstrings.

In a pinch, they’ll know how to respond.

Ever had an email, text, comment or letter you just didn’t want to deal with? Hand over that keyboard. For a writer, there’s nothing that brings more instant clarity than the tapping of letters on a screen or the scratching of pencil on paper. Words are their element of choice, so let them craft a response while you make yourself a cup of chamomile.

They’ll teach you new words.

Every writer has that word they’re always searching for. The search is simultaneously thrilling and frustrating, but finding the right word is like falling in love for a writer. It’s unforgettable. And they’ll continue to use it in their daily life, inevitably expanding your vocabulary.

They value things that actually matter.

It’s hard to be superficial when your lifeblood is dependent on deep thought, observation, analysis, reflection and creativity. Writing is not superficial and neither are writers.

They know how to love.

There’s not a single motif stronger than love. Think of the most unromantic topic to write about. Warfare? There’s an angle on love there. There always is. The largest piece of humanity woven through all topics in history is love. And all writers have written about it. They may not fall in love easily, but when they do, they’ll know how to do it right.
