How To Stay Motivated At Work

Experiencing the hump day blues or the after lunch slump?

We know how hard it can be to stay motivated, however, it’s time to perk up and get to work. Need a little pick me up? Well, we’re here to help!

Take a Break or Go for a Walk

If you’re running on E and cannot bear another second at your desk, walk it off.

This will wake you up a little and get you away from your duties for just a moment to gather your thoughts and shake off the sluggishness. Now, you don’t have to wait until you’ve reached your breaking point. Schedule short breaks to fill up on coffee or take a trip to the water cooler throughout the day. This can help prevent mid-day slumps.

Make a To-Do List

This can work when there’s a lot to do and you have very little desire to even start your tasks. Making a list will get you organized and create a visible goal. Once you start getting the first couple duties crossed off, the rest won’t seem so hard to accomplish. You can even turn the list into a game, and give yourself time limits so you can race against the clock. Don’t let the time crunch affect the quality of your work, though. Give yourself enough time to complete each task correctly.

Lean on Your Co-Workers

Having friends at work is a lifesaver. You’re 1. More willing to go to work in general when you have people there that you look forward to seeing and 2. They can relate to the lack of motivation you’re feeling. Just hearing from someone that they understand how you feel is motivation enough to keep going. Plus, your co-workers may have some tricks to help you.

Building relationships with others can pretty much get you through any situation in life. Work is no different.

Get Competitive

Now, don’t go overboard, but an internal competition with either yourself or a colleague is reason enough to kick your butt in gear. Competitions create goals and goals create productivity. According to Psychology Today, “In the workplace, we are looking for ‘new and exciting opportunities’ that keep us engaged and stretch us to grow. Specifically, we like to work on new and cool projects/initiatives or to be put on task force that will change how we operate internally.” Create this for yourself. Don’t wait for your boss to initiate this challenge. You may even accomplish a few things that will earn kudos from your superiors and co-workers.

We all need a little push sometimes, especially when it comes to work. We all seem to be “working for the weekend,” but let’s face it: we have to work to live, so why not stay motivated and happy? If this all fails, just drink a ton of lattes and load up on the sugar! Just kidding, but if that works for you, we wont judge.
