Everything You Need to Know About Starting a Vinyl Collection

In all things fashion, trends tend to repeat themselves. The same rings true with fads, and this fad in particular is back in full force and it’s time to jump on the bandwagon.

Buying vinyl records is no longer a thing of the past. In fact, many bands and artists are now releasing vinyl versions of their albums for those who enjoy collecting.

And what’s great about the whole trend? Not only are you able to listen to some of your favorite musicians in arguably the purest form (aside from hearing them live) but it’s also relatively inexpensive once you have your collection started.

Since the trend is so big right now you can basically buy a record player anywhere from Urban Outfitters to Best Buy. But the key is to buy the right one. In all honesty, it depends on how much you are willing to spend, but whatever your price range you can be sure you’ll find a record player that’s right for you.

Audio-technica’s players seem to get a good vibe. For the more affordable option we recommend the Fully Automatic Stereo USB Turntable. Not only will it allow you to listen to records, but it will also allow the user to copy the music over to a computer using the provided USB cable. If you’re willing to spend a little more, audio-technica also makes another great turntable. It is the Professional USB Turntable. With these record players, you also will need a stereo and speakers.

If you’re looking for something a little more affordable than the turntables listed above, Urban Outfitters sells record players with the speakers built in. Brookstone also sells players similar to these.

If willing to spend a little more, but want the convenience of an all in one purchase, Walmart sells a record player, CD, cassette, radio stereo all rolled into one for under $200.

Now the fun begins, time to start searching for your favorite records. A lot of stores are selling vinyl, from a select few at Target to an entire shelf full at Urban Outfitters. The best place to look however is at your local record store. Almost every town has at least one no matter how big or small. Since these places are typically independently owned they might even haggle with you on the price and most owners will have your best interest in mind and may ask if there’s anything specific you are looking for. Forming a relationship with them never hurts because some even reach out and order or set aside something they know you’ve been looking for.

Once you find the record it’s important to check it out before you buy it. This really only applies if it is a used record. If there are too many scratches or it’s way too dusty the record might not play. There are record cleaners but they might not make it as good as new. Minor scratches should not affect the album too much.

Once your record collection begins it’s very important to store them properly. You want to make sure they’re stored in an area where it won’t get too hot. If they get too hot it’s possible the albums will bend making them nearly impossibly to listen to. You also may want to consider purchasing bins to store the vinyl in. Target sells bins for under $5 that work perfectly if you don’t want to spend too much on storage options. Keeping records on a shelf is another storage option. The Kallax shelf from IKEA comes highly recommended. Lastly you’ll also want to purchase plastic sleeves. This helps to not only keep the vinyl itself a little safer, but also keeps the cover from getting damaged and the art from fading.

Starting your own collection can be a fun and exciting time. Just remember to keep your own interests in mind and only spend what you are comfortable spending. Within no time, you’ll have a collection to call your own.
