How To Shop At Discount Stores

Discount stores are some of the most overlooked places to shop.

They feature name brand merchandise at a deeply discounted price, so you’d think that they’d be super popular. However, their seemingly endless rows of racks can be daunting to even the most seasoned shopper.

Luckily, if you plan ahead and know your way around the store you’ll be able to fill your closet while keeping your wallet healthy too.

Don’t look for particular items.

Because discount stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls get their inventory throughout the week, you never know what will be in the store when you go. So, you shouldn’t look for a specific kind of clothing or accessory. Basics are always around though, so if you just need some new socks or a cute new bag, you should be able to find something to fit your needs.

Take your time.

Lots of merchandise means lots of great deals, but also a lot to sift through. Make your shopping trips on days when you know you can set aside time to comb through the store. Work your way through all of the racks; you never know what could be hiding!

Know the store layout.

Newer merchandise is at the front of the store. Since the merchandise is newer, it tends to be more expensive. Look in the back corners if you’re trying to find something at its cheapest price. Sometimes, merchandise gets shifted around and accidentally put into the wrong departments, so don’t be afraid to go through the entire store.

Shop often and get to know the associates.

Stores receive shipments throughout the week, so there’s no “best” day to shop.

Mornings tend to be the best time to shop because the store hasn’t yet been picked through if a new shipment was brought in the day before. Plus, it’s less crowded in the mornings and on weekdays. Get to know the sales associates during your frequent visits, and they’ll be able to tell you when new shipments (or special merch!) are coming in so you can be one of the first shoppers to take a look at the loot. They can tell you when merchandise will be going on sale or clearance as well.

If you see something you love, buy it.

Frequent product turnover means that there’s always something new, which is awesome, but it also means that just because you see an item on one trip doesn’t mean that it will still be there when you come back a few days later. If you love it, buy it now so you won’t be upset when you come back only to find that the product has sold out.

Notice the price tag.

Look at the product’s original price and compare it to the price they’re selling it at. Because some of the labels are high-end (think Kate Spade or Ralph Lauren), items might still be pretty expensive, even with a discount. Check to make sure the discount is big enough to make an impact before buying. Pay attention to the colors, too. While each store is different, some price tags are color-coded. Ask an associate for the scoop on what the colors mean for even more money saving!

Shop during the off-season.

While discount stores often have the same merchandise at the same time as big name retailers, the biggest discounts come when items are out of season. Try shopping for bathing suits in the fall or coats in the spring for the lowest prices. Though there might not be as large of a selection as you would have in the right season, you’ll definitely be able to find some steals.

Set a budget.

With all of the deep discounts, it can be easy to go crazy and buy tons of stuff. Before you head to the store, set a budget and stick to it. That way, you’ll be able to know you aren’t going overboard, and that you’re buying items you actually want—instead of just buying them because of their low prices.

With these tips in tow, your next discount shopping trip will be a success. But where should you head for your next shopping spree? We love TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and Ross. Where are your favorite places to find budget buys?
