P&B Shares: The Best Relationship Advice We’ve Ever Received

Every month, the Pink & Black team is asked to share their response to one question.

This month, they were asked to share the best relationship advice they’ve ever received or heard. Here’s what some of them had to say:

My mother always said to do what feels natural. I’m going to paraphrase here, but she always said something along the lines of, “If you have to force anything about a relationship, it’s probably not good.

Whether it’s a breakup, a date or spending time together.”
– Will Rhino

I once had a co-worker tell me that we always seem to get caught up in looking for someone who is just like us. Someone with the same interests and feels things the same way we feel them. He pointed out that we let that overshadow the fact someone who is just like us isn’t always the best for us, because they often times magnify our negative points. We need to look for people who balance us out, who accept us for who we are and don’t want us to change. He said when you find that person, they are worth sticking with. His advice really hit home and has stuck with me ever since.

Although it’s kind of the opposite advice, the best advice I have ever heard applies to those looking to get into a relationship. A relationship will come when you least expect it; when you are no longer looking. When you are actively seeking someone you could pass over someone else who has been right in front of you all along. A lot of people find this saying to be less than true but it’s what I’ve been known to be true for me at least.

“If it is right, it happens — The main thing is not to hurry. Nothing good gets away.” John Steinbeck wrote that in a letter to his eldest son. This was written on November 10th, 1958, and it means everything to me now, so many years later. I get very consumed by lost love, but then I remember that nothing good gets away.
