Master Class: Self-Tanner

If you’re not a big fan of the great outdoors or just don’t have time to sunbathe, self-tanner will be your best friend this spring and summer.

There are great products out there to help you achieve a nice glow. Not to mention it’s much safer than the “electric beach.

” Now let’s get tanner like Danny!

Why Self-Tanners?

Let’s be honest. With a full-time curriculum, a full-time job or even both, who has time to lay out? Some of us may cut corners and hit up a skin-damaging UV tanning bed. Mystic tanning or professional airbrushing are definitely options, but they can get very expensive since they fade and require multiple sessions. Self-tanners are pretty inexpensive and can actually improve skin health if they have moisturizing ingredients. While they can be quite difficult to use, with a little help and practice, you’ll be a pro in no time!

Best Practices

There are two things you’ll want to avoid when using a self-tanner: streaking and and an orange tint. Whichever product you decide to go with, make sure it’s streak-free or read the directions thoroughly to ensure that you are applying the product properly. Tinted lotions and sprays are your best bet because you’ll actually be able to see where you’re applying the tanner. If you make an uh-oh and turn into a traffic cone, there are ways to fix it, so don’t fret. Scrub it off and start again.

We Recommend

  • Victoria’s Secret has both a tinted lotion and spray that will each run you $15. The lotion contains avocado oil and blurs imperfections as well.
  • The Salon Bronze Airbrush Tanning System comes with the spray and applicator. Get this, you can get it for as little as $12.99 at Sally’s Beauty Supply. It lasts up to 10 days and is streak-free!
  • The Jergens Natural Glow line won’t give you instant color. It is supposed to be used as your daily moisturizing lotion and over time you will start to see your skin darken. Because it is a gradual tanning lotion and is meant to have a natural look, there are different shades of the product so you’ll need to select the shade that’s closest to your skin tone much like selecting a BB cream.
  • Tarte’s Brazilliance Skin Rejuvenating Maracuja Face And Body Self Tanner is a tad more expensive at $39. It is paired with a “Tan Applicator Mitt” that assists in applying the tanner evenly and it will keep your hands clean. You should see a change in your skin color after four hours and your skin’s moisture and texture will improve.
  • L’Oreal Paris’ Sublime Bronze collection has sprays, lotions, serums and tanning wipes. There is a wide variety so you can choose which one works best for you. They are easy to apply, streak-free and works quickly for those of you who need a tan ASAP!
