Studying abroad means leaving your life at home behind, including your relationship.
It can be difficult to keep the spark going while you are miles apart. Luckily, we have a few tips to keep in mind to help the relationship stay strong while you wait out the distance.
Have a Serious Talk
Before you leave, make sure to sit down with your significant other to put together a game plan. Not necessarily “rules” to place on each other, just how to keep the relationship strong even though you’re miles apart. This would be a good time to remind each other why you are together in the first place. This way, while you’re gone you can reminisce on the special traits, quirks and experiences that made you date in the first place.
Write Letters
Few things are more romantic than a handwritten letter. It will almost be as if your romance has taken a step back through time. While you’re away, you will be able to read the letters repeatedly and have them as a reminder of the love you and your significant other share. The letters can serve as sweet memories to look back on later on in the relationship after you are reunited at home.
Skype, Skype, Skype
Technology has made it easy to stay in touch while apart. Make sure to take some time when you’re not busy traveling or studying to set up a Skype date. Having a face-to-face conversation with your significant other will make it seem like you’re with each other in person. If both schedules allow it, set aside a time during each week to Skype. This way, you can know when you will see each other next and have something in the relationship to look forward to.
Send Care Packages
You can still do sweet gestures for each other while you’re away. Your significant other can send you some of your favorite treats and foods from home (peanut butter for instance, trust me, you’ll miss it) and you can send little things from your travels back home. Warning: international mail can be a bit pricey, so make sure to keep it light.
Your time studying abroad will eventually come to an end, but if you and your significant other make the effort, your relationship won’t have to end with it.
