If your summer was more about spending money than saving it, you may be looking for ways to earn some extra cash when you head back to school.
We have ideas for earning money on campus, off campus and on the side, so you’ll be able to build up your bank account!
On Campus
Help Your Classmates Out
If you take great notes and keep track of them throughout the semester, or have saved your notes from previous semesters, try selling them.
You can also get a little extra cash by selling old textbooks. Just be sure to not sell old quizzes and exams because you could get in trouble with professors and your school’s honor board for that!Participate in Studies
Volunteer as a test subject for experiments in your school’s psychology or science departments. The experiments often undergo several rounds of preliminary safety tests and adjustments before live test subjects are used, so you definitely won’t be putting yourself in danger, but you will be putting money into your bank account, often with little to no effort involved!
Get a Part Time Job
College campuses are full of employment opportunities. Ask around at school to see if there are any part time jobs available. This is a great option, especially if you don’t have a car on campus to help you get to work anywhere else. You can find P&B’s list of the best on campus jobs here.
Off Campus
Care for Kids
This job isn’t just for high school students! If you like children and have a car and a lot of patience, apply to be a nanny or babysitter. The hours are normally pretty flexible, which is perfect for a college student’s crazy schedule. Plus, kids are tons of fun, and very rewarding to work with!
Work in Retail
If you’re a people person, working in retail just may be the job for you. If you work in a store that you love, you’ll love going to work! Employees often get special discounts, too.
Tutor
You can tutor high school or middle school students in subjects you’re proficient in for a fee. Majoring in a subject in college provides you an in-depth view of one subject, making you a great resource for struggling younger students. Check if you can advertise your services at local schools.
On the Side
Sell Yourself
No, not in that way (what kind of a website do you think we are?!). You can sell plasma, blood and even hair if you’re in a pinch for spending money. Just make sure you do your research first so you know you’re working with a reputable company!
Start a Business
Are you a whiz at editing papers? Are your gal pals constantly gawking at your homemade jewelry? Are your brownies to die for? Start charging for your services! Figure out what you’re really good at doing, and then hone your skills. Then advertise around campus and start filling orders!
Sell Your Stuff
Clean out your closet and sell your old stuff, instead of just tossing it. Ebay, Craigslist, consignment shops or online closet exchanges are easy places to get cash for old clothes, knickknacks and even furniture! If your school doesn’t have a closet exchange (normally found on Facebook), start one up and watch the sales roll in. If you’re feeling really motivated, you can organize a dorm-wide yard sale, where everyone gets together for some spring (or fall!) cleaning and shopping.
