Trend Report: The Midi Skirt

What’s not too long and not too short but just the right length?

That’s right, the midi skirt. Mid-calf length skirts have been around for ages, but they’re starting to make a statement in the fashion world now. We’ve got several looks for you to try, so you can add your personal style to this slightly awkward but adorable trend.

First of all, midi skirts are great for all body types because their shape is naturally slimming and elongating. To ensure the best look, find a skirt that hits your legs just below the knee. If it’s too long, it can look frumpy, and a skirt that’s too short loses the “midi” appeal. Love a skirt that’s too long? Get it hemmed so it hits your legs mid-calf.

Since midi skirts bring attention down toward your feet, shoes are an important part of the outfit. Pair your midi skirt with heels to continue the elongating effect on your body. If the weather is cold, pair your skirt with heeled booties or pumps. When the weather is nice, try wearing strappy wedge sandals.

If you’re more on the petite side, wearing heels with your midi is a must. They will help keep your skirt from overwhelming you and making you look too stumpy. However, if you don’t feel like wearing heels, flats can be paired with midi skirt. Be sure keep the hem just a touch higher than normal so the skirt does not completely overwhelm your frame. You can also rock sneakers to give your outfit a more casual-cool vibe for class or an afternoon shopping.

Wear something tighter on top to keep your outfit in balance, especially if your midi skirt is pleated or full. Tuck in a crisp button-down shirt, a thin sweater or even a crop top if you’re feeling bold. You can even take a slightly large t-shirt and knot it on one side to keep a casual, fun vibe going with your outfit. Tuck everything in nice and tight to keep your silhouette in check. If your skirt isn’t too voluminous, experiment with different flowier tops such as silk shirts and chunky knit sweaters to find your perfect fit. During the winter when layered looks are in, try to pair different long sleeved shirts and sweaters to add dimension to plain pencil midis.

Don’t be afraid to mix colors and patterns! Midi skirts are bold statements to begin with, so play them up by pairing punchy colored tops and bottoms in contrasting colors, or by mixing flowers with stripes or polka dots with plaid. Matching your top to your skirt can also create a cool matchy matchy look with a modern twist. The main goal is to have fun, so play around with different combinations until you find your favorites.

Last, pair your midi with the perfect accessories. Look for a coat that complements your skirt rather than overwhelming it. Neutral colors and classic shapes look best with this trendy item. Use jewelry to similarly complement your look. If you’re mixing patterns, keep it simple with stud earrings and a few bracelets. If you are wearing a plain fitted top, jazz your outfit up with a statement necklace. Grab a bag in a color that matches your skirt or your shoes (or that contrasts with them!), and you will be able to confidently hit the town in style.

No matter how you wear them, midi skirts are a classic and modern trend that is here to stayat least for a while. Whether your rock your midi in the office, the classroom or out on the town, if you follow our tips you will be able to set trends and turn heads no matter where you go.
