Which Type of Resume is Right For You?

As millennials seek to stick out in the job application process, many turn to alternative forms of resumes to catch the eye of potential employers.

From video resumes to graphic design ones, there are more and more unique options to display your background besides a traditional resume.

Video Resumes

Video resumes provide a unique way of presenting your experience and qualifications. While this innovative new way of highlighting your skills may seem like the perfect way to land your dream job, use video resumes with extreme caution. Fortune does not always favor the bold in terms of employment. Understand your potential workplace and ask yourself if a video resume is what they’d like to see. This would be a great choice for those in performing arts or broadcasting since it allows potential employers to see you and your talent.

Graphic Design or Creative Resumes

Creative resumes use non-traditional images and formats to display your experience and artistic sensibilities. These resumes are perfect for anyone applying for jobs in graphic design or creative industries because they showcase your ability to produce graphics, unique templates and designs. For edgy, trendy companies, graphic design resumes are a good option.

Get inspired to create your own resume by checking out this article from Business Insider which ranks the top creative resumes out there. From fabric resumes to ones that require a QR code, there are several ways to showcase your creativity. Similar to video resumes, submit graphic design resumes to employers that would need to see your talent in addition to your experience and qualifications.

Traditional Resumes

Traditional resumes are your ordinary, run-of-the-mill resumes. While traditional resumes may pale in aesthetic comparison, do not underestimate the importance of developing one. If you’re pursuing a job in analytical or scientific fields, this should be your primary resume. However, everyone benefits from having a traditional resume, even if they have already developed alternative ones.

Traditional resumes usually include very minimalistic designs, simple fonts and very basic information. Avoid any embellishments and use your traditional resume to help you showcase your professionalism and achievements.

When determining what resume type is best, always consider the potential employer and work environment. Young, edgy companies are better options for non-traditional resumes while jobs that are old fashioned or strictly business tend to expect traditional resumes. Understanding potential employers is key to sticking out amongst other applicants and landing an interview.
