How to Make Use of Your Winter Break

Finals are finally done, and you’re ready for a month of school-free bliss. After a few days though, having nothing to do can get boring.

Here are seven ways that you can make use of your winter break so you come back to school refreshed and recharged, ready to take on the second semester.

Research Summer Internships or Jobs

Summer will be just around the corner, so use your free time now to look for a summer job or internship. Take the time to update your resume and LinkedIn, and reach out to any contacts you may have at home. Search job boards and get your applications in so you can focus on school (and not stress about summer plans!) when the semester starts again.

Start a New Hobby

Have you been dying to try your hand at painting? Or a collection you want to start? Maybe you want to try writing a blog? Whatever your dream hobby is, now is your chance to start a hobby without any distractions. Starting one now gives you plenty of time to get into it, so once school starts up, your interest won’t fizzle out because you’ll already be fully invested.

Look for Scholarships

If you’re going to spend some time surfing the web, you might as well surf for scholarships! Sites such as fastweb.com offer free databases with scholarships for pretty much anything. Even just a few minutes of filling out applications can land you some pretty big bucks down the road.

Visit Friends

Chances are, you have a few friends from school who don’t live near you. Use your break to visit them, and see a new place too! See their hometown and meet their families and high school friends. You can even invite them to your home too. Or, go on a road trip and see some places none of you have seen.

Get Ahead of School Work

If you already have your schedule and books for next semester, try getting ahead in your classes over break. Even simply reading the syllabus and planning out long-term papers and projects can be extremely helpful in the long run. Of course, you shouldn’t try to teach yourself everything, but reading ahead and trying to get a light grasp on some of the material beforehand will save you time and effort throughout the semester.

Make Some Money

Pick up a part-time job or some odd jobs during break to make a little extra cash flow. It’s especially helpful for covering the cost of holiday gifts!

Relax

Above all else, make sure you schedule some time during your break for you to relax. That’s what it’s for! Unwind from the semester and treat yourself to a movie marathon, an at-home spa day, or just a few days sitting on the couch in your pajamas doing nothing. You will thank yourself next semester when you’re drowning in work in the library.
