P&B Shares: Our Best Money Advice

Every month, the Pink & Black team is asked to share their response to one question.

This month, they were asked to share some of the best advice about money they’ve ever heard. Here’s what some had to say:

Sign up for a retirement plan as soon as possible. Being so young and it being so early on in our careers it’s hard to imagine one day retiring and you may think you need all the money you can get right now.

When I first started at my current job I didn’t sign up for the 401K plan they offered. It wasn’t until being here about a year that I decided to sign up. I’m so glad I did, it only takes a little out of each paycheck and the company matches whatever you decide to put in. You really can’t lose!

Every time you go out, don’t leave the house with anything smaller than a $5 bill and then at the end of the day take out all your dollar bills and put them into a jar, piggy bank, etc.  It’s a really easy way to save and you’ll be surprised how fast the dollar bills start adding up.

Make a weekly or monthly budget and stick to it! Write it down and subtract any expenses from it. Moving from the south to the east coast where the cost of living is drastically higher, I really had to learn how to balance and budget my money. Regardless of where you live though, it’s always a good idea to make yourself a budget.

Track how much you’re spending by creating a personal excel chart for your use. Keep track of what your spending and how much the expenses are and you’ll soon have a chart that you can compare weekly or monthly expenses. If one month your expenses are significantly higher than other months, you can go back and refer to your spreadsheet and see what was the difference and make adjustments for next time!
