The shirtdress is a classic look that has been in style for a while now, but it was all the rage on the spring fashion show runways.
Designers such as Altuzarra and Rebecca Minkoff brought the fun and flexible trend to their shows. Use our tips to rock a shirtdress off the runway.
Play With Length
Shirtdresses are available in all different lengths. From short and flirty to long and low-key, there’s something available for every style and body type. Test out different lengths to see which look best on your body. Then, decide on shoes based on your dress’s length. The longer the dress, the higher the heels you should wear. To keep from looking too overdone, pair flats or sandals (or even a pair of Converse sneakers!) with short dresses, and use chunky heels to keep midi- or floor-length dresses from looking frumpy.
Belt It
When buying your shirtdress, be sure to get a roomy fitting one, which may be a size or two up from your normal size. By keeping it loose, you’ll be sure that the buttons on your dress won’t look strained, which will allow your whole look to seem effortless. Most shirtdresses are cut very straight, so give your frame some shape with a belt. Use a wide belt to break up a patterned dress, or a thin one to give your silhouette some subtle definition. You could even try using a scarf in a coordinating or contrasting color for a soft, carefree look!
Be Creative
Shirtdresses don’t have to be worn just as a straight up dress. Try wearing one unbuttoned over another dress, skirt, shirt or even jeans for a totally different look. You could also pull on a skirt over your buttoned dress for a whole new edgy appearance. The sky’s the limit—feel free to experiment.
Add Volume
If you have a shorter shirtdress, put a petticoat underneath it to add volume and create a ballerina feeling. If your skirt is just a little too short to wear for work, you could also wear a slip or petticoat underneath and let it hang below the dress hem to add length and make your dress appropriate for the office.
Accessorize
The best thing about shirtdresses is their subtle and timeless look. They provide the perfect classic backdrop to experiment with newer trends. Wear a bold statement necklace with your dress, or try out metallic shoes to provide a pump of color and trendiness without going overboard. Help usher in spring by wearing your shirtdress with fun pastel tights or by layering it under a cozy cable knit sweater to keep out the winter chill.
