Getting your first tattoo is exciting but one major thing to remember, it’s permanent.
This ink will be on your body for life so it is imperative that it is done smart and done right. This should not be something that is done impulsively. You have to make sure this is something you really want as studies show that one-third of people with tattoos actually regret getting them.
Before diving in, you should first decide on a design. Remembering that this isn’t something you can’t go back on, make it meaningful. If you know of someone who can draw really well, have them draw up something unique and tailored to you and your life. Try to stay away from trends because trends fade and tattoos do not, unless you go through tattoo removal which is not pretty at all.
If you’re not looking to get anything customized or have the resources on a unique tattoo, google tattoo images of things you are interested in or stop at a bookstore and grab a tattoo magazine to skim through. You’re sure to find something you love.
If you’re not familiar with any trusted tattoo artists, do your research. Don’t just go to any shop because you don’t know their work. Ask friends and family and look into online reviews. Do extensive research because it’s much better when you know you can trust your tattoo artist.
Once you’ve you decided on a design and an artist, prepare yourself. Tattoos do not feel awesome, it hurts…badly. Know this and learn to relax. One wrong move or jump and the artist can slip and mess up. Also know that once the artist has started, he or she now must finish because who wants an unfinished tattoo?
Bring a friend, significant other, or family member that you know will be supportive and comforting through the whole process. You’ll need an arm or hand to squeeze. After the tattoo is done, your work is still not over. You have to take good care of your tattoo in order to avoid fading or even an infection. Wash your tattoo often with antibacterial soap such as Dial and keep it moist afterward with something like Aquaphor.
Do not pick or scratch your tattoo. This can irritate the skin and also cause you to actually pick off the ink and cause fading. Don’t fret over redness or swelling because this is common. Since you will be wrapping the tattoo in plastic, it won’t hurt to ice it to assist with the swelling.
Once your tattoo has healed, you’ve successfully went through the process of your first tattoo! Don’t go too crazy, tattoos can be addicting.
