Better safe than sorry, right? Emergencies can be scary to think about, but being prepared is important. Having an emergency kit in your dorm, apartment or car can be the difference between surviving or not. We’ve put together a list of the most useful items to keep in an emergency kit.
Water
Arguably the most important thing you can have in your emergency kit, water can serve a multitude of functions.
You can drink it if normal water supplies become unsafe, and you can also use it for cooking and cleaning. Pack away a few gallons, or at least a couple of bottles.Non-Perishable Food
Keep some food and snacks that won’t go bad over time in your kit. Canned goods, granola bars and crackers are all good choices. Put enough food in your kit to last you a few days, in case of an extreme emergency.
Portable Radio
If the power goes out, you’ll be able to stay informed with a battery-powered, solar-powered or hand crank radio. The American Red Cross makes a hand crank radio with a smartphone charger. Make sure you pack extra batteries, too!
Flashlight
Flashlights will let you see at night if you lose power in a storm or if your car breaks down at night. Even a small flashlight can provide lots of light, so don’t forget to include one in your kit. Again, make sure you put some extra batteries in your kit so you aren’t left in the dark.
First Aid Kit
A basic first aid kit can come in handy in emergencies. You can either buy a pre-packed one or create your own using this handy checklist. If you take any prescription meds or wear glasses or contacts, keep some extras in your first aid kit. It also might be handy to keep a copy of your prescription in there too in case you lose the original in an emergency.
Hygiene Supplies
Having spare soap, antibacterial gel, toothpaste and feminine hygiene products and the like will come in handy if you have to take your kit with you and don’t have time to pack a separate bag.
Once you’ve gathered all of your supplies, put them in an easy-to-carry box or bag. Stash one in your car and another in an easy-access spot in your dorm or your apartment and you’ll be prepared for any kind of emergency.
