A facial is the quintessential spa treatment. Not only is it relaxing, but it can help fix any of your skin problems, and make you feel refreshed and beautifully confident. Spa trips are a splurge though, so we’ve put together a guide for the best at-home facial for your skin type.
When done once a week, these facials will leave your skin glowing and healthy!Slip on a robe, play some relaxing music, and get all of your ingredients ready before you start your facial.
Step One: Cleanse Your face
Before you do a facial, you want to make sure that your skin is thoroughly cleansed. Using your favorite cleanser and lukewarm water, wash your face using gentle upward strokes. Be sure to get rid of all makeup traces. Follow it up with a facial scrub, either homemade (you can find some great recipes here) or store bought. Rinse your face and pat dry with a clean towel.
Step Two: Steam Your Pores
Steaming your face will help your pores open up so your mask can get deep into your skin and really work its magic. Boil some water and carefully pour it into a bowl. Place your face over the bowl and drape a towel over your head. Stay in the steam for about five minutes to let your pores open. For a really relaxing steam treatment, put a few drops of essential oil or some tea bags into the hot water.
Step Three: Apply A Mask
Mix all the ingredients for your skin type (see below), and smooth the mixture evenly all over your face, being careful to avoid your eyes and mouth. Keep it on for 15 minutes. While the mask is working, sit back and relax. Put some cucumber slices or damp tea bags over your eyes for a real spa-like experience. Once the time’s up, rinse the mask off with warm water and pat your face dry with a clean towel.
- Dry Skin: Mash together half an avocado and half a banana with one teaspoon of honey for a seriously moisturizing mask that’s almost good enough to eat.
- Oily Skin: Beat one egg white until fluffy, and then mix in one teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice and say buh-bye to shine! Note: lemon juice can be harsh on delicate facial skin, so don’t leave this mask on for more than 15 minutes, and wash it off immediately if it starts to burn.
- Combination Skin: Mash one ripe peach, one egg white and one tablespoon of sour cream together. The vitamins in the peach will make your skin bright, and the lactic acid in the sour cream will moisturize your dry spots.
Finish Up
Complete your facial by swiping a toner over your fresh skin (choose one appropriate for your skin type!) and applying a moisturizer. While rubbing in the moisturizer, give yourself a mini massage by using strong upwards strokes. When you’re done, admire your glowing skin!
